Looking for Bodies in Dearmin Cemetery

It turns out there is a cemetery located in our neighborhood, hidden behind several houses.  The local historical society has been trying to gather as much information as they can, and I happened to go by while a group from the Indiana Geological Survey at IU were using their ground penetrating radar to locate where the bodies are located.  Most of the headstones are completely broken, missing or shattered (there were only 9 burials recorded from 1852 -1874).  You have to wonder what this neighborhood looked like while these pioneering families lived here.

Looking at plant cells

I have been looking at various cells from plants just to see what they look like.  This is a shot (ca 40x) of the outer skin of the stem from my Swiss Chard (I picked my last batch from the garden yesterday-from now on it is what I can grow in the pots in the garage).  It doesn't really show much, but I thought it looked rather neat.

I started to post this image in my Thanksgiving preview last week, but retracted it to be safe.  There is a very long and involved (and probably true) story as to how Grandma Anna Huffman obtained this VERY SECRET recipe.  She actually was able to make the "Do-nuts" and I remember loving them (probably in the late 1940's to early 1950's). The few times we have tried to make them in recent years have failed miserably.

The reason I decided not to post this before our annual Thanksgiving gathering was the fact that the Huffman clan might have thrown me in the river (or worse).  I figure it is safe to reveal now since we won't get together until next July and by then they won't remember I did this.  If anyone tries to make them, let me know if you are successful!  (hint--lard, only lard--no healthy stuff allowed)

PS  If you want the story, you will have to ask someone who has a better memory than mine (it involved a flood)..

As our past disappears...

Photo credits for these two photos go to my wife (well, she was using my camera).  We drove through Paoli on our way south last week and went by the remains of the block of buildings that were destroyed in a fire the previous week.  The photos aren't contest-winning, but they tell the story.  Actually, considering the windshield wiper was going and it was a driving rain storm, these aren't bad!

For those (most of you) who don't know Paoli, this was a two-story brick building.

Backyard Birds -- 10

I don't know why I hadn't put this guy up yet--he is one of my favorites at the feeder.  The Carolina Wren is small and full of energy!  They like my bird feeder and I see them nearly year-round.

I see me..... (or is it eye see me?)

Your subject probably has to have dilated eyes for this to work.  This is certainly one of my stranger self-portraits, taken by accident earlier this fall.

Flashlight painting

It finally quit raining long enough over the Thanksgiving trip to take a few photographs.  This is one I really wanted to try.  It is a time lapse (about one minute) where I used a flashlight to "paint" the parts of the bridge that I wanted to show up in the photo.  I definitely want to do more of this, but I need a more homogeneous light source.
